Recipe

Magnesium-rich everyday meals

Magnesium is involved in several hundred enzyme reactions, including those governing muscle relaxation and sleep. Intake is commonly below requirement, and the fix is food rather than a tablet.

Ingredients

  • Pumpkin seeds — among the richest sources available
  • Almonds and cashews
  • Til (sesame), including as chikki
  • Ragi and bajra
  • Palak, methi and other dark greens
  • Rajma, chana and black dal
  • Dark chocolate, 70% and above
  • Banana
  • Whole wheat rather than refined flour

Method

Step 1

A tablespoon of pumpkin seeds daily — over curd, in a salad, or eaten as they are. This alone covers a useful share of the requirement.

Step 2

One millet meal a day. Ragi or bajra in place of rice or wheat at one meal.

Step 3

Greens at least four times a week, cooked briefly.

Step 4

Rajma or chana twice a week as a main dish rather than a side.

Step 5

A square of dark chocolate in the evening, if you want one. It is a genuine source.

Magnesium supplements can cause loose stools and interact with some medicines. Food first is the sensible order.

Why it works

MigraineMagnesium has reasonable evidence in migraine prevention, and low levels are more common in people who get them.
Sleep and muscleIt is involved in muscle relaxation, which is why shortfall shows up as night cramps and restless sleep.
Refining removes itMilling wheat and polishing rice strips most of the magnesium. Whole grains are where it went.
