Recipe

Ginger and tulsi kadha

Kadha eases a sore throat and loosens congestion. It does not treat an infection, and nothing here should delay seeing a doctor when one is needed.

Ingredients

  • 2 inches ginger, crushed
  • 10–12 tulsi leaves
  • 4 black peppercorns, crushed
  • 1 small piece of cinnamon
  • 2–3 cloves
  • 2 cups water
  • 1 tsp honey, added at the end
  • Juice of half a lemon, optional

Method

Step 1

Crush the ginger, peppercorns, cinnamon and cloves. Crushed, not powdered.

Step 2

Bring the water to a boil and add the crushed spices.

Step 3

Simmer on low for eight minutes, until reduced by about a third.

Step 4

Turn off the heat, add the tulsi leaves, cover and steep for three minutes. Tulsi should not be boiled.

Step 5

Strain, cool to drinkable warmth, then add honey. Honey goes in off the heat — heating it destroys what you added it for.

Step 6

Sip slowly. The warmth on the throat is part of the relief.

Never give honey to a child under one year. A sore throat with high fever, difficulty swallowing or difficulty breathing needs a doctor the same day, not a kadha.

Why it works

Warmth and steamA good deal of the relief is the warm fluid itself, which thins secretions and soothes an irritated throat.
Honey off the heatHoney has reasonable evidence for easing cough. It should go in once the liquid has cooled enough to drink.
Tulsi steeped, not boiledThe volatile oils are lost to prolonged boiling.
